Statement from the Right Honourable Joe Clark, P.C., C.C.

Posted on April 26, 2011

Mr. Brison received the message below from the Right Honourable Joe Clark today. Mr. Clark served as the MP for Kings-Hants for a brief period in 2000 and became Canada’s youngest prime minister when he was elected in 1979.

“Hi Scott, I’ve been away from Canada for most of the election campaign but, as you enter the home stretch, I want to wish you the greatest success in the constituency which, thanks to you, I had the honour to represent, briefly, a decade ago. Looking back, it took a lot of courage for you to step aside then, so I would have a chance to lead our Party on the floor of the House of Commons — but courage has been your characteristic.
I am very proud of the high standard you continue to set as a Member of the Parliament of Canada. That seems to me to be especially important in a period when the general respect for politics, and for public service, is in decline. The tone of public debate in Canada is so much more negative now, but your personal trademark has continued to be positive and forward-looking. That’s been helpful for Kings-Hants, of course, because yours is one a handful of voices that is heard and respected across party lines, no matter who forms the government. But your conduct and example also hold out hope for the country, because they remind us how much we can accomplish when we emphasize the goals that can bring Canadians together, rather than the differences which can drive us apart.
My only activity in this election campaign will be to cast my private vote, but I want to express my admiration of your leadership and example. If it is any help to you, please feel free to make my views known to anyone in Kings-Hants who may be interested.
Best wishes,
Joe
